Holy cow.
You SAID it.
So well.
So very well.
Huub, I really liked it. I love your ideas. We need to discuss this when we talk. Good music - interesting juxtaposition of swimmer, industry and bloggers. My only suggestion is getting the Quick start on your stuff. I actually went to this 3 times before I had enough patience to wait for it to come up. It doesn’t help that QT doesn’t give you any clue that something is actually happening. I generally figure that my browser has frozen up, or something. But when I saw that somebody had commented on your piece, I figured it must be working, so I waited it out, while eating my oatmeal, and sure enough - there it was.
I know, I know, I’m an impatient American, but there you are.
Thanks again! I’m going to post that.
Milt
Hi Milt! Thanks for your comments. Any idea how to get this Quick Start going? Huub
I don’t know what you use to encode your quick time, but in Vegas, it is located up a “streaming” tab. If you are using FCP - then I suspect there is a similar tab - it might be under the video options too. Someone who uses other systems could tell you better. I would just keep looking around in your encoding options till you stumble on something that says “enable fast-start” I was wrong - I just looked it up and it’s called fast-start - not quick start.
Hope that helps.
Milt
I’m Using iMovie HD on Mac G4 Powerbook. I check this feature. Thanks again. I just removed the hack from the Syrian Hacker. It was in the index and config files of wordpress. Now my database is a mess so be back with the blog in a few day. Might start using Show in a Box!

Preserving Humanity
It’s an old story, but it’s still a good one. At the powwow, it’s not always about just preserving culture, and keeping traditions alive. Lots of times it’s about seeing somebody - maybe somebody you’d really like to see, and seeing if they want to see you - maybe they do - maybe they really do. More info at the permalink.

My second video this week. See! I’m not a total slacker!
Maybe this could serve as the start of a game. Sing along to your favorite totally obscure song you think no one else has ever heard, and post it.
Has anyone heard this one before?
this is so great, so hilarious. you knock the ball out of the park with this one…
can you post the mp3 of this song somewhere, I love the logic. He makes perfect sense…
Hey Adam! Glad you like it. I’m always glad to inflict Chris Chandler on anyone. He’s brilliant. I don’t have an MP3 unfortunately. I have his music on cassette tape, and no way to play it back anymore, so I used this video for my audio: http://www.archive.org/details/coffeehouse-Chris-Chandler
And Chris has his own web site here, you might find recordings: http://chrischandler.org/

I’ve got to work on the quality of my videos. I think my compression settings are off. Or maybe it’s just the Xacti’s quality.
But it’s really about the content. My electric tractor.
Definitely about the content. I love that tractor. So excellent. Are you going to tell us some more about it - how it works - did you make it? like that?
As for your settings - it appears that you are not using your native aspect ratio. I have a Xacti too, but I can’t tell you exactly what the aspect ratio is. I know that there are hi def xactis too. Can you take a peak at the original footage, before your compress it, and see what’s going on there. Actually, with the xacti, you really don’t need to do much. I use Vegas but I can bring the stuff in - edit it, and take it back out without re-compressing so that works pretty well.
Milt
Anyway loved seeing that tractor.

Sometimes, I get tunes stuck in my head. Melody lines, no words. Every once in awhile, I turn them into songs. We’ll see what happens with this one.
This happens to me, too. Ever since I was two or three years old. Good to know I’m not alone. Next time I get a persistent one I’ll post it.

Been busy this week, working and preparing for my trip (T minus 2 days!). So here is just a little glimpse at what it’s like to try to fall asleep during an Arizona thunderstorm when you live in a tin box (AKA 1970s trailer).
amazingly beautiful in all its simplicity! a simple view, a few cue-words and a whole poetic universe opens to complex story-telling… a forth-comming trip, a trailer, a stormy night… a visual haiku, a space condensed, with timeless imaginary repercussions. absolutely great!

From: http://www.makevideo.org.uk/2008/02/24/semanal-week-8-science-homework/
This week’s video is a collaboration with my daughter Elizabeth. Her class at school were each given a small kit and asked to do some science experiments at home. A fun bit of father-daughter time, and a great opportunity for a video.
I’m in two minds about the content of the homework, though.
On the one hand, it’s good to see schools and parents working together in education and any opportunity to get involved in practical science is great.
On the other hand, I’m very uncomfortable with the insidious nature of the corporate sponsorship and advertising in this pack, especially the way that part of the “experiment” is really just junk science aimed at convincing children that they need cleaning products. I’m sure that any effervescent mixture would “produce a rich lather” and displace ketchup in the same way. And without leaving half a jar full of undissolved pollutant behind.
While you watch this, see how many casual bits of advertising and Proctor & Gamble product marketing you can spot, and have a good think about how 10-year-old children are being trained to be good little consumers in the name of science.
This is really extraordinary. I’d no idea school was like this, but unsurprised and somehow saddened and frightened for the future.
this is indeed scary as hell. US schools are taking more corporate “donations” because government continues to cut funding. “Donations” means companies have access to push their branding on impressionable kids. great.

Semanal08 : W8 - Southern California Wildfires
Part One : The Winds That Fanned The Flames
I shot this footage back in the fall of 2007 when the southland was engulfed in flames. The fires destroyed many homes in San Diego, Orange County and Los Angeles County. The fires were kicked up by the usual late year santana winds that blow in from the south, raising tempratures, felling trees and downing power lines.
By the time the fires had burned out more than 2 weeks after they started, half a million acres had burned, 1500 homes lost, and 9 people died.
I obviously had no idea at the time when I woke up at 2am from the house being rocked by the strongest winds I’ve ever experienced, but it was the beginning of a very tough time for Southern California, and an awful, traumatic time for an unlucky few.

anyone know how to get vimeo content to display and play correctly within Semanal?
see below….seems like if youre using Vimeo, it’d be best to just embed the video directly. Dont bother using the custom fields that our wordpress plugin provides. Vimeo embed code automatically adds all the links.
