Week 3, 2008

Semanal: Week 3Post and watch videos using comments here.

Click on this post for Week 3’s videos, and leave a comment with a link to your video file AND a link to your original post (so people can go there and comment and subscribe).

You don’t need to worry about embedding it or doing anything fancy. Just post the actual video file’s URL. Because when people click on the link to your video file, it will play in a magic pop-up box! Like this :)

You can even create comments on comments – sub-threads about individual videos. You can also click the checkbox at the bottom to receive all new comments/videos by email – and of course you can subscribe to comments by RSS feed.

Let us know (help [at] semanal [dot] org) if this doesn’t work, or if you need help.

Weird? Maybe, but I’m okay with that. Taking a week off of straight documentary stuff to explore a feeling I was having. Why? Because I can.

It would be great to be able to add this blog (and / or the Ning site) to my autopost group @ Blip so I don’t have to navigate elsewhere in order to post / play :)

2008-01-20 06:25:13

sure, what info do you need to do this? we can make you admin. however, we want the videos to show up in the comments for each week. if not, we’d just have hundreds of posts for everyone’s separate videos. not helpful.

we definitely need to try to make this group project easier. working towards it.

2008-01-14 05:51:13

would’nt it make sense to have one ftp account for one account at blip with all the videos in that feed and people just upload to that? – then you can do stuff with the rss feed. at least i could sort them and stuff that way and do some neat viewer stuff to make it easier for people.

2008-01-14 08:55:11

we want Semanal to be a distributed project. everyone puts their video where they want. We’re just cataloguing here. I wonder if an RSS feed could be made by scraping all video URL’s posted in comments?

2008-01-18 12:00:53

@jay Yahoo Pipes might be a good way to filter the comments feed to do that

Doh, sorry you guys. I thought I had a whole bunch of videos stored up on blip over the last fortnight that I’d been uploading via Shozu, but it turns out none of them arrived. I will get with the programme soon, I promise.

post here as you can. even back post if you want. we’re just using this site to keep a record of everyone’s work.

By the way, if you have never posted a comment to Semanal.org, the comment must first be approved. After this, the site will know you are legit and there will be no moderation. So sorry to anyone who kept reposting their links thinking their was a problem. After we all post once, it should be fine for the rest of the year.

I started rendering on Saturday, so as far as I’m concerned this is still on-time.
I was going to film one of two things on Friday for this week, depending on whether I had to report for jury duty or not. Guess which one I did?

Semanal08 : Week 3 – Elegy To A Land Lost

I awoke one morning to the sound of clanging metal and heavy equipment. Looking across the street that runs behind our house, a monster had risen from the dirt. It’s steel skeleton was glowing in the morning sun, majestic and unforgiving. This is progress. This is the future.

Week 3. Bitter TV: New York Fragmental.
An almost parody of experimental film…
but I fell in love with the music, and found a really cool filter that made the colours of the footage really pop, so I couldn’t go through with it. Shot on my cell phone.

2008-02-04 10:31:26

This is really effective use of cellphone footage. I’m an afficianado of the form and am glad to have discovered your work here.

Glad to have found you.

Semanal 2008.

Workin’ it.

2008-02-04 11:32:26

Awww – thanks. I am in no way an afficionado on cell phone shooting. My cell phone records such crappy sound that it was a real letdown, and so I hardly use it. I had just got my phone in the summer, and so tried it out on the streets of NY in Aug. Since then hardly use it, because sound is so bad. Will check out your stuff for tips though.

Although this is not a Lumiere video, it was Lumiere-inspired in that I set up a tripod and just filmed what I could see. I always notice so much using this method and often discover things, such as the study of contrasts in this video, by using Lumiere-inspired rules for making videos.

Please note that this video is linked to a research site and that comments posted to the site may be used in research. For more information about the study and how posted comments are used in research please see: http://anthrovlog.wordpress.com/about/

I am working with loads of schools at the moment – who have just (it seams) woken up to new technology and cross curricular creative learning – this is part of my own experiments preparing for a session later this year.

Jon Hammond for Alcatel-Lucent / Bell Labs: “On stage, on television or on the radio waves
everyday I feel lucky because I’m ALWAYS ON! Jon HammondMusician, television personality and radio broadcaster Jon Hammond boarded a Concorde in 1981 to travel from New York to Paris at supersonic speed, and he never slowed down.Jon travels the world, touring in Europe and Asia two or three times each year while broadcasting his “HammondCast” morning radio show seven days a week. At home in the United States, Jon splits his time between New York City and San Francisco and performs four to five concerts each month at local hospitals, nursing homes and prisons. His cable television program, “The Jon Hammond Show,” is in its 25th year and going strong.“In my business, it’s essential to be contactable 24/7. I couldn’t organize as much as I do without being ALWAYS ON.” Inspired by the Beatles and fascinated by the radio (he built a crystal radio at the age of five), Jon knew he was destined to be a musician. Although that’s a departure from tradition – Jon’s father and grandfather were physicians – Jon carries on the family business in his own way by performing in some of the very hospitals where his father once practiced medicine.“I’ve seen people get out of their wheelchairs and dance more times than I can count, so I’m happy I can make a difference playing for those who are less fortunate than me.”Jon has not forgotten those who opened doors for him when he was first starting out in music and broadcasting, and now he uses his radio and cable television shows to do the same for deserving young talent.Like Jon, we at Alcatel-Lucent are passionate about connecting people through communications technology. In our Bell Labs locations around the world, we’re working on new and exciting innovations in next-generation broadband technology to ensure people like Jon can find even more creative ways to share music, moments and memories. *Link: http://www1.alcatel-lucent.com/theworldisalwayson/jon.html
