A New Year feast on the beach. Great! I love that she took time off to smile for the camera.

Happy new year to everyone!
Wrote on my blog this morning that 2008 was, for me, the year of making peace with online video, so this is very timely. Thanks for setting it up, Rupert!

Happy New Year everyone! 52 videos in a year sounds doable. Here’s my first.

2008-02-17 13:36:02

The first thing I did with my new cell phone was–make a video! I realized you can observe a lot of different things sitting in one vantage point. I called this video six “textures” while thinking about how texture often refers to how things feel. Yet we cannot feel things in a video. How can we show what things “feel” like? Also, texture can mean other things, artistically, besides how things feel. It can refer to an “identifying quality or character…of a piece of art” (The Free Online Dictionary). First there was NaVloPoMo and now there is Semanal! The Revolution will NOT be televised.

2008-02-17 13:54:22

The first of a series of interviews about belief and the beliefs of the people that hold them.

Selling lots on ebay and craigslist, with all sorts of people coming over to buy goods out of my garage leaves me feeling dirty.

For Christmas, I took my Dad to see the Dolphins’ game in Miami. We had a great time. Here’s the video I made from our trip.

Rupert, the originator of NaVloPoMo, challenges us again with Semanal- post 1 video a week for 2008. 52 videos is not that many! we can do it! and it will get us all videoblogging again…join the ning group so we can all encourage one another!

The big present from Santa this year was a 45-pound trike. just like the ones at his preschool Took the boy to the elementary school blacktop to give it a spin (our street is too hilly). He prefers to scoot, rather than pedal, and can move a lot faster than I expected. Didn’t want to be one of those parents who puts a helmet on their kid on a tricycle, but um…

2008-02-17 14:42:06

First Semanal post, created today, involves me just playing around with my video camera with lights. Quick project, no sound.

Here’s a video of me making a torta. There are plenty of ways to make tortas and this is one option if you’re hungry. All the ingredients were purchased at a Mexican market called Pancho Villa Farmer’s Market here in San Diego.

Ingredients (estimated cost $2.54 for two tortas):

* Bolillo - $0.50
* Avocado - $0.33
* Tomato - $0.17
* Onion - $0.16
* Queso Fresco, $0.50
* Chile, $0.12
* Ham, $0.66

My first real vlog entry.

2008-02-17 15:15:10

Last weekend I attended the annual hacker congress in Berlin. As usual, being surrounded by some of the world’s most brilliant and creative minds left me inspired, enlightened, and exhausted. This vlog only captures about 1/10 of the interesting things that took place during the congress, these are my video highlights.

2008-02-17 15:20:05

will this do? hint: it’ll have to :)

2008-02-17 15:22:11

Shot this on the first, before finding Semanal, but it still works for week 1.

2008-02-17 15:25:56

This still counts as week one if I started editing it at 9:00pm on Saturday night, right? I vote yes!

2008-02-17 15:28:15

Ok, just finished it for week one! I’m writing a bit of stuff about language. The text goes one way but the video is an example of how much language and culture can be found at the supermarket.

This seems to be the protocol, so I’ll point to my week one video here, too

2008-02-19 12:46:51

here’s to another year of wrecking and salvaging.

2008-02-19 13:13:37

The first video out of 366 goes through the pictures that I took all the way through 2007.

2008-02-19 13:18:26

I’m learning to play piano, and so far it’s slow going. Mostly because I have a rough time making my right hand do one thing while my left hand does something different altogether, based on cues from my brain, which doesn’t read music all that well. Especially the bass clef. Ack. So here’s my face while I try to work it out.

2008-02-19 13:44:08

So I’ve committed myself to this thing called Semanal. In addition to being a neat thing to do, it will also keep me motivated to make video’s throughout the year. It’s like when you start working out at the gym at the beginning of the year due to some New Year’s resolution. It’s always better if you work out with a friend to keep you motivated. I feel that everyone at Semanal is there to keep me motivated.

People think that broadcasting on the radio is really complicated and requires a lot of equipment. Well, as this video shows, the hardware part is easy. It’s the legal stuff that’s a pain in the ass. In some ways I hope all FM stations move to satellite. Maybe then (with the FM waves cleared) I can pull out this little transmitter again and have some fun.

2008-02-19 13:45:38

I am amazed. 81 members already, after only 5 days. People from so many different places. This is going to be quite a year of video.

I’m really happy that so many Spanish speakers have joined. I’d love to see people from every continent, in many different languages. The Ning groups that are being set up are one way of letting people share within their own geographical or linguistic boundaries, as well as sharing with the wider group.

Thanks to everybody who’s joined - and keep spreading the word… :) I’d like it if people kept joining throughout the year. It’s the weekliness that’s important, not restricting it to those people who found out about it right at the beginning.

2008-02-19 13:46:56

Ok here we go this is my video for the Week 1

2008-02-19 13:48:15

I’m still not caught up enough to know where one is to post anything and I’m, for now, ignoring topics and just labeling one video a week for the project - so here’s my Semanal #1, a not subtle enough commentary on unfortunate recent events surrounding a certain pop star.

2008-02-19 13:49:28

I signed up for semanal08. After a forced sabbatical of 5 months I trying to get back on the horse. Hope I will succeed. Today, did three washes, bathed the boys, myself, gave the beds new covers, folded laundry, did the dishes, backed a cake with the boys (see it on twitter, flickr and mobypicture) and posted a video and it’s only 13:30h. Maybe I will pull it of: one video a week.

Details
Late last summer, the family drove out to Lake Havasu, AZ to visit the in-laws. One evening as we were headed out, we were treated to a glorious sunset. the sky turned colors and the car’s shadow raced alongside us. I was entranced for the entire journey. I originally planned to make 3 seperate Lumiere-type videos out of the footage, but upon further review I decided to cut down to the best shots and create a more consice clip.

Shot on FLiP video recorder in 3iVX format.
Cut in Final Cut Pro in PhotoJPEG.
Color timing and some light roto in AfterEffects.
Encoded in Episode to FLV and H264.

Music by Weekend Players. Into The Sun from Pursuit of Happiness

2008-02-19 17:52:58

I’ve made the videos, but I haven’t posted here… so I’m going back and adding them in. :)

Hi,
This will have to do for my “Week 1″ entry. I shot it on January 3rd from the webcam in my truck and uploaded it via Evdo (Verizon Wireless Rev-A)

I wanted to show the difference between the immediacy of video blogging and the ridiculous Time Black Hole that is ‘television’.

I recorded a 30 second bit about what I would do on Seesmic(.com) in both a video blogging and a ‘tv’ style…

My family - at least my dad and grandma (his mom) - were superstitious. They always made me eat at least one spoonful of black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. For luck. They’re gone now, and nobody can make me eat black-eyed peas anymore. But what if they were right? About the luck? And anyway, I like this dish. I make it vegan - no salt pork here. Hopping John and Happy New Year!

2008-02-19 19:16:26

In my preparations for Road to Guadalupe, I have been trying to learn all I can about the vlogosphere. After some fairly intense research, I have decided to add a vlogging element to this blog, making it a vlogblog hybrid. Fun!

My inaugural post is a very-short promo for Carp Caviar. I don’t fully understand it, so don’t ask. It’s kind of a mystery, but that’s what’s so great about it, “It’s provocative!”

Week one of Semanal and I am already resorting to my old NaVloPoMo tricks of posting unedited, uncompressed footage. Give me a break this week. We have the NaVloPoMo screening on Saturday and I’m a little busy. This video is of Stock Ghyll, the stream near my parent’s house in the Lake District (alright, alright, their second house - I’m embarrased to admit). It had just rained and the ghyll was in full raging torrent. It’s so beautiful up there (in the North!) - I really love it. I have a proposal for any British vloggers. Our American friends are having their vlogcamp, so let’s have one of our own - but without the camping. Let’s go to the Lake District and stay at my parent’s house (I’ll make sure there are no parents) and walk, look at the rain and think about the future of videoblogging in the UK. Let’s do it before Rupert goes to Canada. There’s no coming back from there!

I started this year with some Jin Shin Jyutsu. I intend to offer a bunch of Jin Shin Jyutsu Self Help flows this year. We all spend way too much time in front of computers and so we can use some health tips.
